Jewish Awareness Month
is an event that goes on throughout campus from January 11th to
February 23rd. Many of my older friends have held director positions
and so it was only natural for me to apply for one when the time came around. I
didn’t get the position and I was initially unsettled about the situation.
However, I wound up having a great time as a member of the general staff; I
learned that decreased power leading to decreased responsibility can sometimes
result in a more enjoyable event experience.
I know that failure is
a learning experience and I don’t fear it. I am usually in a rut after failing
but it never consumes my life and I work hard to bounce back. After reflecting
on experiences in this class and the dozens of other blogs, the concept that that
failure is common and to be expected in the real world was reinforced. I am
definitely more likely to take a risk than I was four months ago whether that is
in the classroom or a social circle.

Hey Ryan,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like that whole mishap worked out well for you anyway. Great job taking initiative and applying. I know many people who would shy away from instances of responsibility and any extra work. I also really liked that you were able to learn from other people’s posts and cultivate a risk-taking attitude. May it lead you on the further success. Failing to get a job is definitely a tough pill to swallow – I’ve been there plenty of times in my corporate life. The good news, as you mentioned, you were able to enjoy yourself as a general staff member instead of being wound tight with the responsibilities in a director role. Also, we can take these opportunities to still prove that we can bounce back from failure and lead even without being in a formal leadership position (dress for the job you want, not the job you have). There are always plenty of chances to be a leader without the title, and your efforts will come full circle and impress the decision makers for next year when director positions are available again. ReplyDeleteHi Ryan,
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to gain more leadership positions in the organizations I participate in and that has happened to me before where I had so much to offer but ended up not being chosen to take up the role. At first it stings a bit not being chosen but it’s good that you still participated as it shows you care about the organization, that to me is overcoming failure to land a role, is to show people you are still trying.
